Mentorship

The Mentorship

It has been proven that mentorship has one of the most powerful influences on young people, especially girls.

Studies show that girls who have benefited from mentorship are more likely to pursue their studies, develop their self-confidence, and orient themselves towards fields such as science in general, and more particularly: technology, engineering, and mathematics, where women are traditionally underrepresented.

But faced with the multitude of mentorship programs available, how can parents, educators, and mentors find the one that best matches each girl’s goals and interests?

Here is an overview of the different types of support for girls, focusing on meeting, “exchange, guidance” and the discovery of science in a fun way.

The search for the ideal solution and highlighting how Sciences for Girls’ unique Mentorship model enables girls to reach their full potential.

An Important Factor for Girls

Mentorship offers crucial support that can have a significant impact on a girl’s personal and professional development. According to a study published by Mentor, “The National Mentoring Partnership”, female students with a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college, 78% more likely to volunteer, and 130% more likely to hold leadership positions.

Mentorship is particularly a key factor in encouraging girls to pursue non-traditional scientific fields such as Technical Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics where women represent less than 30% of the workforce.

At SciGi, mentorship programs are implemented to promote intellectual and physical development.

Our mentors, often women studying/working in various scientific fields, work directly with girls to strengthen their self-confidence, guide them in their career choices, develop their technical skills, and discover how science can interact with the rest of daily life. Through our programs, girls receive the necessary tools and experience to envision successful and fulfilling scientific careers.

Types of Mentorship Programs

When looking for an appropriate mentorship program, it is essential to understand the different types of support available, each tailored to unique needs and goals:

One-on-One Mentorship

In a one-on-one mentoring relationship, the mentor and mentee work closely together to establish a relationship of trust and support. This personalized format allows the mentor to focus on the individual needs of the mentee and tailor her guidance to specific goals, skills, or challenges. Our association offers individual support that has a particularly positive impact on improving motivation and “achieving greater serenity in their journey.”

For girls interested in scientific subjects and those who are questioning, an individual relationship with one of our mentors can be transformative. SciGi offers one-on-one mentoring, connecting them with professionals from various fields, to help them develop their Science skills while building personal connections. Mentoring can take place in two combined forms: in-person and/or remotely

Group Mentoring

In a group mentoring model, one or more mentors interact with a small group of mentees (between 3 and 5). This format encourages collaborative learning and allows girls to build connections with their peers while receiving guidance. Group mentoring programs are particularly effective in developing teamwork skills and fostering a sense of belonging, essential for girls evolving in scientific fields, often male-dominated.

Episodic Mentoring

Episodic mentoring (also called “flash mentoring”) offers short-term guidance and support during an event, workshop, or structured session. Unlike traditional mentoring, episodic mentoring does not require a long-term commitment but focuses on specific skills or goals.

This flexibility is ideal for busy professionals who still want to make a difference, and for young girls who only need temporary support to receive occasional advice.

Through occasional mentoring opportunities, such as company visits and exchange workshops for example, SciGi offers a glimpse of concrete careers, allowing girls to interact with mentors from different sectors during enriching one-time interactions.

This format has proven effective in opening up new perspectives, especially for those who wish to explore various scientific careers in order to orient themselves towards those that better match their personality, aptitude, or project.

Key Considerations When Choosing a Program

Choosing the right mentoring program requires finding a balance between the mentee’s needs and interests and the opportunities offered by the program. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Interests and Goals: Is the mentee interested in Science and Technology? We set up specific programs designed to develop interest in Science and the discovery of scientific careers, while other programs may focus specifically on academic success or social development.
  • Level of Commitment: Not all mentoring programs require the same level of commitment. Our association offers both occasional and long-term mentoring, allowing participants (mentors and mentees) to choose the format that best suits their schedule and level of engagement.
  • Mentoring Context: At Sciences for Girls, mentors are women scientists active in various fields who wish to share their experiences/paths/advice to help the beneficiaries of our programs.
  • Program Structure: Some girls thrive in individual situations, while others benefit from group interactions. SciGi offers different formats so that each girl can find the support she needs.
  • Geographic Accessibility: For families living in remote areas, virtual mentoring programs are an excellent alternative. The possibility of virtual meetings offers accessible mentoring, regardless of location.
