Her device consisted of a lever inside the vehicle that controlled a rubber blade outside the windshield. The lever was operated to bring the spring-loaded arm to move across the windshield. A counterweight was used to ensure contact between the blade and the glass.

<img type="image/avif" class="wp-image-4871 lws-optimize-lazyload" alt="" width="800" height="1274" / data-src="https://sciencesforgirls.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Brevet-Essuie-Glaces.jpg">
Credit: Cockpit – accros of cars

She had a prototype made by a local company, then filed a patent application on June 18, 1903. She obtained a 17-year patent on this model. Similar devices had already been proposed but only Mary’s was effective, “only the commercialization stage was a failure. It would indeed take until 1922 for Cadillac to adopt it as” standard equipment; the patent had then fallen into the public domain.

<img loading="lazy" type="image/avif" class="wp-image-4873 lws-optimize-lazyload" alt="" width="600" height="195" / data-src="https://sciencesforgirls.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Essuie-Glace.jpg">
Credit: Toyota Vannes

The device was improved in the meantime in 1917 by Dr. Ormand (Hawaiian). Indeed, the windshield wiper designed by Mary Anderson is manual: the driver must use one hand to move a lever that activates the wipers, and the other hand to steer the car, operate the gear shift and brakes. In 1917, Dr. Ormand invented the automatic, electrically operated windshield wiper. Used worldwide, this invention remains today essential for the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and other road users. Mary Anderson, visionary inventor, would thus, through her invention and without knowing it, save the lives of several generations of motorists.
