Raised in a family that placed great importance on education, she studied at the best schools in her region. At sixteen, she contracted tuberculosis and was forced to stop her studies for two years. This experience developed in her a desire to work in medical research. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block3\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-2ms93\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"viewer-cm8qq2477781\" class=\"PuKmT YjabP\" dir=\"auto\"><strong><span class=\"_1Kc57\"><em>\u201cChinese medicine will help us overcome deadly diseases worldwide, and populations will benefit from its advantages for health promotion.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block4\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-92gs7\" class=\"EY0Xg W2aKK PuKmT YjabP\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"_1Kc57\">In 1955, she graduated from Peking University Medical School in the field of pharmacy, then underwent training from 1959 to 1962 in traditional Chinese medicine. In 1967, as malaria was ravaging China and killing thousands of soldiers during the Vietnam War, one of the founders of the Chinese Communist Party set up a secret project aimed at discovering a cure for malaria, and appointed Tu Youyou as its head in 1969. These new responsibilities led to many sacrifices from the young woman who exiled herself to southern China and had to be away from her husband and two daughters. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block5\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-34ulh\" dir=\"neutral\">\n<blockquote class=\"_0Rimk\">\n<div id=\"viewer-3uv062477783\" class=\"PuKmT YjabP\" dir=\"auto\"><strong><span class=\"_1Kc57\"><em>\u201cIf I could develop (medical) skills, I could not only stay healthy but also heal many other patients.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block6\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-d74hh\" class=\"EY0Xg W2aKK PuKmT YjabP\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"_1Kc57\">For years, she and her team reviewed thousands of traditional Chinese remedies, until \u201cthey came across a Chinese plant, <strong>A<\/strong>\u201d<strong><em>rtemisia annua, <\/em><\/strong>known for reducing the number of parasites in the blood. Research on this plant led her to discover <strong>artemisinin<\/strong>, the active ingredient for fighting malaria, which she then tested on herself in 1972. After about thirty hours, <strong>artemisinin<\/strong> showed encouraging results that allowed her to move on to trials with real patients.
