Hi !
My name is Adora Nwodo. I am 25 years old, and I am a Software Engineer! I am also a published author, a public speaker, and a tech content creator. In fact, I have a YouTube channel (AdoraHack) where I publish content on software engineering, career growth, and lifestyle. I have also written a book called “Cloud Engineering for Beginners”.
I work at Microsoft in Lagos, Nigeria. I have several missions. The one I am currently working on consists of building platforms that enable Augmented & Virtual Reality on the cloud. The cloud refers to the servers accessible on the internet, as well as the software and the databases which run on these servers. If you’ve ever used Instagram or Snapchat filters, you’ve interacted with Augmented Reality (AR). Sometimes, I do some coding too, and I can also intervene on maintenance or security issues.
I don’t work in a team that builds the experiences for customers, but instead, in a team that builds tools that allow other developers to build these experiences. They include the quality of the products and service offering, but also the quality of the customer relationship. I find my job very interesting, and I believe the technology we develop will enhance the way we interact and communicate with each other.
Concerning my educational background, I have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Lagos in Nigeria. I spent 5 years getting my degree and graduated with a first class. It was a complete degree, so I didn’t major in any specific area of computer science. I think that the most essential things to know in high school to study software engineering at university are the fundamentals of computer science, data structures and operating systems.
Today, my greatest achievement is my book. It is targeted at tech newbies or people transitioning from a different tech field trying to start a new career in cloud engineering. It introduces the concept of the cloud, as well as viable cloud engineering career paths, what they entail and how to navigate them. My aim while writing this book was to teach cloud computing to beginners because I was once a beginner. The cloud is the foundation for all our tech innovation today and now more than ever, cloud engineering is an in-demand field. This book will help introduce people to the field and if they like what they read, they can go on to pursue careers in that space.
When I don’t work, I do activities like DJing, swimming and exploring new restaurants in my city. I am also a supporter of SheCodeAfrica and women in tech generally. I speak at their events and donate anything I can when it’s necessary. Besides, I try as much as possible to keep my personal life personal and my professional life professional.
If I were to give a piece of advice to young girls who want to go into science, it would be to just do it, and to not be afraid.
Today, there are many role models to follow. Women in STEM are beginning to show themselves and do amazing things, so they should be rest assured that there will be people here to support and help them grow !
